Quickbites - Gastronomia Braccini

Something quick and delicious, everyday.

Modern living requires, more often than not, dining out and ordering food to go. This has become the reality for too many people and is something that most come to Italy to escape. Food, whether found in a restaurant or in someone's home, always has that sense of home made.

In fact, it is true that Italians do not go out to eat in order to have a special meal they can't cook at home, as do many other cultures. They dine out to socialize despite the food being less than what their mother makes. Therefore, any restaurant that is not above average, or excellent by foreign standards, does not survive.

As a rule, Italians do not like take out...or at least not the foreign kind. Italy has a long tradition of Rosticerie and Salumerie that prepare food for workers who cannot go home at lunch and young people who miss Mamma's cooking but have not learned to use their kitchen for more than reheating. These have little in common with their foreign counterparts in that the food is made fresh, the menu changes regularly and is, typically, quite good.

In this category, at the high end of character and taste, lies the Braccini brothers in Borgognissanti. In the last area of Florence one would expect to find haut cuisine, these true Florentines offer hot lunches of delicate pastas, savory meats and seasonal favorites. In summer, try the panzanella. In winter, the polenta and boar meat sauce.

If you like, the shop has a wood table for you to eat at or on a sunny day, walk a 100 metres to perch yourself on a wall overlooking the entire Arno and it's bridges (a personal favorite). While waiting for you food to be heated, take a look around the store. They have a wide selection of wines, cured meats, fruit and delicacies to tempt. The cost of a two course meal with bread and water....€ 5!
