Visitors to Florence invariably spend hours in Borgo San Lorenzo and Piazza della Republica perusing the shops in search of Italian Style. The sadness is that, with little exception, what they find are the same global chains that populate malls and central shopping in every major European city. Made in Florence . . . hardly; made in Italy . . . doubtful. With rare exception. On the corner Borgo San Lorenzo,
where the market stalls commence, sits Free Globe, a unique boutique both for its decor and denim lines. Offering only their own brands, the store is a blend of french country furniture, market crates and stylish clothing. The range of jeans is vast and has something to suit most tastes. Ergonomic low-rise, the latest fashion this season, sit beside distressed straight leg and boot cut. Finishes include zippers, snaps and buttons ensuring that no one will mistake them for the
Levi or Guess lines. It doesn't end with jeans, either. Free Globe has an assortment of tops and jackets to complement their pants: tartan plaids in denim cloth or the traditional jean vest; fully saturated colors or faded blue; heavy weave or light cotton; all made in Italy.
Free Globe has two shops in Florence; one at Borgo San Lorenzo and another in the underpass mall of the train station. While you will find some of the same clothes in each, they do have a different style and, to that extent, a different range. If you don't find something to your taste in one, try the other and you will be assured to arrive home in true Italian style.
